They got a name of a town/city/country out of a ''special'' person, things, animals, almost anything~~... the symbol that represent the town/city/country..
Somthing random that grows in the area that is popular, maybe special traditions, special people, or many fascinating citizens that live in the town can have an influence on the town/city name. Canada was given it;s maple leaf because Canada was famous for maple leaf trees& it's syprup.

I am from SA and here they name towns after anybody who was not white ten years ago. Genuine !! All the towns that have Afrikaans or Apartheid linked names are being given African names now - sort of a poke in the white mans eye. Comments please...
