Depends on how u look at the question. if the egg is a chicken egg then the hen had to give birth to the chicken but if the egg is just an egg...reptiles and many species of fish and dinosaurs also laid eggs and they were laying eggs long before chickens ever existed.

i say the hen. had it been the egg, there wouldn't have been anyone to incubate it...
this has been a question since a long time. What i think ( i did a speech on this) the hen came first. My reason is God or some creator created Earth (this is for religious people) and God created animals. Now in the bible it did not say anything about a chicken. So i think animals mated and mated till the dinosaur age. By that time, the big comet hit and probably made some animals mutate by the extreme heat and turn into a soon-hen/chicken shape. Later on they reproduced into a hen or chicken and we have our modern day chicken/hen
The hen, as God created animals first. There had to be a hen to lay the first egg!
it all depends if you believe in Creation or not. if you do, then God created the chicken, who then layed an egg. If you dont, then evolution evolved a chicken from an egg and then the hen grew up.
There first has to be a creator in order to create a creation...therefore hands down, the chicken came before the egg.......
