Twinned Towns?

Question:When a town is twinned with another town in a different country - how and why do they settle on the chosen town? Is it carefully planned out or just a random thing?

Just curious that's all!

Answers:
Twinning of two cities or towns is often done with the goal of fostering human contact and cultural links. In Europe it's known as "twin towns". In North America & Autraliasia the term is "sister cities".

It's like a larger version of "pen pals". It often leads to student exchange programs and economic or cultural collaborations.

The city I live in - Toronto, is a Friendship city with:

Amsterdam Netherlands
Ho Chi Mihn City Vietnam
Kyiv Ukraine
Quito Ecuador
Sagamihara Japan
Warsaw Poland
Good question i don't know myself but will be sure to watch peoples questions lol. In our train station there are photos of our twinned town's train station.
It can be carefully planned or it can be spontaneous.

Sometimes twinning is due to shared industry or it may be a deliberate trade or tourist link. One place I lived in developed a twinning just from school foreign exchange trips. Links have also been formed where army troops have been stationed abroad.

Birmingham is twinned with other Birminghams. This is because of the shared named but possibly also, the city founders were emmigrants with links to the city.
my town teignmouth is twin with a place in France perros gurrec or something.
but here we don,t like the french for a lot of reasons i won,t go in to now.
and also i,ve been to this place and it looks nothing like our town.
how stupid is that.
"Twinned towns", or in the U.S., the practice of a town having a "sister city," has been going on for a little over 50 years through the efforts of a group called "Sister Cities International."

Last year (in July 2006) they held their fiftieth anniversary convention in Washington D.C., and it was noted then that the organization represents all 50 U.S. states and all 5 U.S territories. 694 communities here are paired with 1,992 partners world-wide.

The group represents 1,749 international communities in 134 countries. California and Japan have the most partnerships.

One mission of the group is to provide grants for art & culture needs in each city, humanitarian assistance, future needs and the needs of youth for education.

The group can be reached at this link:
