the first known private library was in the town of Ugarit (Syria). most of these libraries were in fact more like archives than libraries in the way we know them, and very few were open to the public. probably the oldest and most widely recognized "public" library was the Royal Library of Alexandria.
The librarians inventory the libraries. Much easier now because the books have bar codes and we do it electronically. Years ago we had to do it by looking and touching each book.
The Egyptians. Instead of books, they had many, many scrolls of papyrus paper.
