What unit of measurement should be used when deciding on the size of an area rug ?

Length (in feet) x width (in feet) = square feet
You would use inches or feet. You measure the area you want to cover with the rug. Measure the length & width. Then you go to the store & look for those measurements in a rug you like.

Some how I don't think I answered this correctly. But I don't know how else you would measure for a rug.
Square feet are useful, but one could have several different shaped rugs with the same square footage. You really want to measure the actual dimensions of the room, length and width.
