From the top of a light house 210 feet high, the angle of depression of a boat is 27 degrees.Find the distance from the boat to the foot of the lighthouse.The lighthouse was built at sea level.
we're supposed to round the measure of the segments to the nearest hundredth.The answer I got was 66.4.Is this correct?
Answers:
No. The answer is 107. The angle of depression is the angle at the top. The triangle you made has the opposite side of x and the adjacent side is 210. You have the equation: Tan 27 (degrees) = x/210.
i got 66.15, cuz it was 6.147, and then hundretth is the 2nd number after the decimal point so you round
ok this is how you do it...I should know because i just finished taking a test on this stuff and I got a 97...firstly you make a triangle. next since the angle of depression is 27 degrees, the angle of accession is also 27 degrees, therefore, you get a right triangle looking like this:
www.clarku.edu/~djoyce/trig/ri... (link to a picture with a right angle)
the far left angle is 27 degrees, the far right side is 210 ft, and we can declare the bottom side as x. You can use other trigonometric ratios to solve this, but i used tan. Using tan you get the equation tan 27 = 210/x. After getting x alone you get the equation x = 210/tan 27. Well tan 27 = 0.5095, so you have 210/.5095 which equals 412.168 ft as your final answer
the reason myfluffy is wrong is because tan is opposite over adjacent, not adjacent over opposite...good way to remember this is SOH CAH TOA
Sin = opp/hyp
cos = adj/hyp
tan = opp/adj
