Because on the morning of May 5,1862 4000 Mexican soldiers destroyed the French and traitor Mexican army of 8000 at Puebla, Mexico.

The Mexicans won some battle over the French but ended up losing the war.

It is their "Independence Day."

EDIT: Ok, I stand corrected...LOL. Maybe I should do research before believing what I hear from other people. Wikipedia clearly states: "Americans have only a cursory understanding of the significance of this day; it is often mistakenly assumed to be Mexico’s independence day, and in practice, it is usually celebrated on a superficial level." and "It commemorates the victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza over the French expeditionary forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862." Because it Mexico's independence day.. i think.

The beer man........ It's all about the BEER (or tequila, or rum or, or, or)

happy fairy has it right, though I'm not sure about the year or the number of soldiers but yeah that's pretty much what happened anyway it should only be celebrated by Mexicanos
