Texas is the only state that was once its own republic (from 1836 to 1845, after declaring independence from Mexico). When it became a U.S. state, it retained the right to divide into FIVE states if it ever decided to do so. It also retained the right to hold most of its public lands as state lands, rather than federal lands. Texas also has NO natural lakes; every lake in Texas was made by damming a river to form a reservoir.
