In 1990, in Feb., no-smoking bans began on flights of less than 6 hours in the U.S. By 1998, 90% of all flights everywhere had banned smoking.

One actually had fresher air on planes when smoking was allowed .They had to filter and scrub it, and provide more oxygen. Now it is virtually all recycled so the airline can save money.
I thought some of the Russian carriers still allowed smoking?
I travel by sea or train these days, much more civilized.
i could on the zepplin but look what happened.
I am an English born retired Aircaft Dispatcher/Load Control Officer and have worked in a few countries for different carriers. I seem to recall in the 70's certain 'curtained' areas were designated non-smoking and I think the Yanks were the 1st to operate totally non smoking flights, European Carriers very slowly followed.
When our friend says the air was cleaner because it was filtered and cleansed that is debatable. Theoretically it was cleaner but to any non-smoker with a keen sense of smell the air coming through those nozzles still stank...many smokers cannot appereciate how sensitive the sense of smell is in some non smokers. If you were to stand under the fusalage next to the vents you would always, always see a thick, gungy build up of brown nicotine and darker tar that smokers, non-passive and to a large extent even passive smokers suffered with. Prior to my retirement on health grounds I noticed that the tar/nicotine deposit was still there but greatly reduced. Air Rhodesia now Zimbabwe used to operate 57 seat Vickers Viscount aircraft, it was 2 of these aircraft shot down by terrs in 1978 and 9. Rows 1 - 6 were designated no smoking but as soon as the warning light went off a curtain of smoke enveloped those in the non smoking seats.
I would hazard a guess but a guess only that Boeings were built without ashtrays much earlier than say Airbus and I would not be surprised if Eastern blok built aeroplanes still had ashtrays as a standard armrest fitting but an airline could specify on an order if this feature was required. Guessing the year is quite hard being as it is dependent on age of aircaft, country of manufacture and country of carrier...neverthe less I would like to see the answer from someone who actually knows and need not guess.
Thanks for this question...brought back some lovely memories when work was a pleasure and workmates were good friends.
