Confidence is not the answer. A lot of very smart people are very awkward socially. Maybe confidence in their mental capabilities, but in my experience this isn't even true. A bashful person will still be bashful when praised over their intelligence.
It's not natural for everyone. Some people have to work hard. Some people pick up concepts really easily. Either way, to be smart takes either a forced or natural inquisitiveness. It's easier for those who are naturally questioning, but that doesn't mean that anyone, given the proper conditions, can be "smart".
Skilled language use is usually the first thing people look at to find a smart person - build your vocabulary and grammar. With math and science, being able to do/understand a concept is one thing, but being able to explain it, even to yourself, is quite a different matter.
Question everything and learn the best ways to talk about them. Find something interesting, even if it's small, in everything you learn; take interest in things you do not know. Ultimately however, it doesn't really boil down to any one particular word (confidence, etc.) or point (linguistic skills, interest, etc.). People find a way whether on purpose or accident, and despite what others think about them.
