Elephants are only more powerful in the day. At night the lions win. I watched a video where a pack of lions took down an elephant and ate it (it lasted them a week). In fact that was on 'Planet Earth' this last Sunday.
Though generally speaking an elephant could slaughter a single lion, or a lot more, especially in the daytime. It would only take one kick of the leg.
Elephants probably just don't want the responsiblity of ruling an entire kingdom. They are humble creatures.
