for instance, 'court embarrassment' would be a clue...what the?! how do i match that to an answer?
or 'draw'...i just don't get it, please help
Answers:
You read the clue, look at the space where it's supposed to go (such as 19 across), count the number of spaces and think of a word that means the same thing or fits the clue that fits the space. It becomes easier once you've gotten a few words filled in, since you then have some letters filled in for other clues, which can narrow down the options.
Here is a great site for whenever you have trouble thinking of a word that fits a clue: http://www.oneacross.com/
if that's the across clue, look for a corresponding clus (for example, let's say that's 1-across, what's the clue for 1-down) and by the proces of elimination, you can figure out the puzzle.
not sure of the answer to court embarassment but draw could either be sketch, tie or even -- do either of those work?
cheat

i'd guess that the answer is jester
as in 'court jester'
a jester was a joker and possibly an embarrassment
