I was never very good at howrse, but they do need to be in the pasture, even if you have to buy some points at the store, they keep all the new points in the back room, so there are easier to find, I don't know how much they cost. May be cheaper to buy a new game to get the points out of it if you can't find a store that has any this late at night, but what ever you do make sure you get those howrse in the pasture before you stop playing the game or it will be to bad for the howrse and may not act right the next time you get your game out to play with it!
