Where do you think the term "broken heart" came from?

Question:I have often thought about this. When one is sad, or has lost one's love, one's heart actually does ache. I mean, physically, one can feel it; as if it were bleeding inside the chest.

I am sure that this physical feeling caused people to use the terms heart break or heartache.

It makes me think that some chemical or hormone or something is released in the blood and this causes the physical feeling in the heart. What do you think? Why else could one even feel one's heart?

Answers:
Actually the heart is just an organ. The brain actually causes the heart to pump rapid and the convulsing muscle spasms of the pumping heat cause the "broken heart stigma". It just sounds better than "oh, my broken brain matter"!! USMC 60-68
I feel the phrase broken heart came from when some ones heart froze and broke. like you know when you'll speak sometimes and then you'll choke .. well when your heart chokes... your broken hearted..
I would say it has to do with the fragility of the heart. Like glass, once broken, it cannot be mended.
its brain feelings, but it make a hurt to heart, but.like we say time treat it...its chemical brain thing physical things
probably because people suggest love comes from the heart and when love stops it shatters (i think)
broken heart is used as a symbol to state that someone hurt ur feelings n u r shattered by it, stating further that it cannot b repaired again.
