Where does the name fitzgerald come from?

Question:

Answers:
Fitz literally means SON OF .................. HOWEVER ........ it was normally only used if the father was acknowledging illegitimate children ..... so Fitzgerald would be the illegitimate son of Gerald.

These children would not, except in very rare circumstances, inherit their fathers estates but would be well looked after, normally well schooled, and given a start in life that lead them to higher things than they would have attained without the acknowledgement.
the normans
Ireland i think
It's most likely Scottish.
It is Irish for "son of Gerald"
France,I believe,or at least the French version of it that became Irishized and today ended up as Fitzgerald.I know that Bill Bryson wrote about who those people were that took it to Ireland, better to read his book(something about the history of the English language, can't remember its name)to get clearer details.

Ireland.
Fitz is of Norman origin and means son, often used for an illegitimate child. For example, Fitzroy was more than likely the illegitemate child of the king.

The Fitzgeralds can be traced back to the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, one of whom came into England with William the Conqueror, and afterward settled in Ireland.
The prefix Fitz is of Saxon origin (but became Norman "son of" or FILS in French) the suffix Gerald is Norman so as a name it`s a Norman derivation very prevalent in Ireland.
It's Irish. I enjoy Bill Bryson's books, but he is, nevertheless, a US citizen!
