Difference between probable, plausible, and possible...?

Question:What's the difference?

"The research experience I acquired while at... serves as a valuable stepping stone for any involvement in research that is plausible in my future."

Is it correct to use plausible in that sentence? or possible? probable?

Thanks!

Answers:
plausible is generally reserved for describing arguments that, on the surface, seem to make sense, or seem to be likely.

usually, it is reserved for theories or ideas that seem to have merit, but are not proven or disproven. "it is plausible that spending more money on defense leads to greater security"

It seems terribly awkward in that sentence.

Avoid it entirely by saying "The research experience I acquired while at... serves as a valuable stepping stone for any future research project I may beome involved in"

possible means that it may or may not happen, while probable means it is more likely to happen than not.
probable means likely
plausible means believable
and possible means it could happen

none of the words fit into that sentance
Possible means it can happen. As the old adage says, anything is possible!

Probable means likely. It is probable the tide will come in and out tomorrow.

Plausible means it is not only possible, but realistically possible.

I think you can use any word correctly in your sentence. My suggestion would be to not use any of them.

"...serves as a valuable stepping stone for involvement in future research."

This would eliminate wordiness. If you are to be involved in something, obviously it was possible, plausible, and probable, because you are involved in it; and if you are involved, it is clearly part of your future, so you don't need to point that out.
