If there was a question that involved mens' balls or something, as a woman you'd write n/a (not applicable) because as a woman 'balls' don't apply to you.
There are plenty of other perfectly polite examples - I just can't think of any at the moment!!
Does that help?
As I'm sure you think, whatever is "not applicable" does not apply, is not relevant to the matter at hand, doesn't count.
If you are unmarried and filling out a form, and the questions says: "Husband's SSN: ________," you simply write "na" (some prefer "n/a") on the line.
You are telling the person that the question does not apply to you for reasons that anyone would accept. You cannot use "na" if you were fired from your last job and are asked "Reason for leaving _______?"
not applicable can also mean unavavailable, like, say, this form that your filling out asks you for an e-mail adress and you dont have one, you would put N/A for not applicable.
for example:
if a man is filling out a form and the question asks date of last gyno exam... he can out N/A not applicable
