it was originally spelled N I G G E R and used by americans to describe negroid slaves. the whole issue of slavery in the united states is a very difficult one, remaining a constant source of strife and bitterness between the ethnic groups of todays united states, and while many afro americans today use the word among each other with a kind of grim pride, it is considered highly inappropriate if not unlawful for white americans to do the same.
