The word obstreperous is in the dictionary, why do Australians say obstropolous?

Question:Australians shorten the word obstropolous to the slang term of "stroppy" and my husband whose English keeps correcting the Australians he hears saying it.

Answers:
'Stroppy' is OK; it just seems to be an Aussie way of shortening obstreperous. I like it. But you are right, many Aussies do say 'obstropolous' and I don't know how that evolved.

I once heard an English woman on one of Jamie Oliver's shows describing a delicous meal as a 'concophony'. When Jamie asked what a 'concophony' was, she said 'a symphony'. She had the wrong pronunciation and the wrong meaning!
