Where did the saying "cut the cheese" originate from?

Question:Me and my Mom were talking about that and came up with this:
"Maybe uncut stinky cheese doesn't stink, but when you cut it the smell comes out."
Stupid idea, i know but it's all we could come up with.

Answers:
"cut the cheese" = to pass gas, or to fart.

The term was originated when someone sliced
into a new wheel of cheese, but most likely
a brick of Limburger cheese... which stinks
terribly despite it being fresh cheese.
It means farting.
Cutting of stinky cheese will deliver a similar odor to crud vapors.
Sorry to be finicky, but something originates. It does not originate from.
