Why don't people know how to spell and use punctuation correctly?

Question:here's an example: idea's, get's (why is an apostrophe used with these words?..it gives the word possession of something, as if it could possess...

Answers:
Many people don't have formal training in grammar now. When I was in high school (mid 90's) it wasn't taught as a part of the curriculum. I think that is still true now. It seems like when people are in doubt they just throw in some extra things like commas or apostrophes.
Personally I feel that grammar (including punctuation) is very difficult to learn, especially the esoteric components. I'm educated and English is my first language, but I still make mistakes.
As far as spelling goes, who 'needs' to know how to spell when there are spell checks everywhere (so it seems). In these days of IMing and text messaging and such, who knows how to spell correctly anymore. Something which also bothers me is when people spell a word 'correctly' but are using the wrong spelling for the given meaning (ie. prey vs. pray).
Here on YA I am less critical of other's spelling because it seems like a lot of the time errors are just from being tired, rushing, and having fingers get 'tangled' on the keyboard.
idk
ppl DO know how to spell words , it's just cooler like this
probably because some people are more educated than others...duh
it's the gene pool. any wonder Bush can fool so many people?
Nitpicking get's you nowhere.########3
i dont no
wat r u tolkin bout guy''s !! I luv mi bday??!
Short term memory, we often forget.
& Practice makes perfect, and we often don't practice.
i know what you mean but i'm guilty of not using the proper punctuation coz i'm trying to type fast. it's weird to add extra apostrophes and i don't know why people do it.
I don't know.

I was in Kohl's today (a department store) and went to the restroom. The sign on the door said, "WOMENS." I guess that is where the womens all go, and all the mens go in the other one? :)
They went to Public School.

Where education is not as important as indoctrination.
They didn't pay attention in school!
LAZYNESS

oR they type to fasat and dont reize it like me hehe
They were too busy getting stoned, playing " Fashion Show " or teasing the other kids that were actually paying attention in class.
People type like they're texting, and they've forgotten how to type properly. Sometimes it could be an honest mistake, but not likely.
When you get my age and have been out of school as long as I have you tend to lose the ability to remember how to spell certain words. Now as for the punctuation I try not to make too many mistakes but my old brain is tired and I make mistakes sometimes.
Because people are lazy and never do it and forget!
People don't know spelling and punctuation for one simple reason, in my opinion: they don't READ. If you don't see punctuation and spelling, you can't learn them. I believe reading is rapidly becoming a lost art, and I feel sorry for those who don't read; they have missed some wonderful things that are between the pages of a good book. :-)
I hate that, too! My biggest pet peeve is the misuse of there/their and your/you're.

I suppose it's because they never paid attention in school. I also think a lot of people don't realize how much misspellings and poor punctuation impacts the reader.
i don't know they should just use spell check lol
Obviously because they weren't properly taught it in school or didn't get enough practice to learn it correctly. Remember: having gone through school doesn't mean you know EVERYTHING 100% and can do it 100% of the time. You could get 90% on writing assignments all the time and keep losing the 10% because of poor spelling and grammar. Heck, the schools here don't even teach spelling past grade 6 and there's almost no formal look at grammar at any level--unless you do a foreign language.
Ouch, my head hurts now.
I know exactly what you mean and I'm not talking about using 'dunno' and 'wut' and that silly stuff that people use for IMing. I believe it's more than just laziness, but lack of education. People who don't read enough will never see how things should be spelled. More reading translates into better writing quality.

Some examples that really get on my nerves:
its, it's
than, then
your, you're
didn't, did'nt
their, there, they're

I bet half the people who read this answer wouldn't even know what the difference is. :p
The internet generation is especially guilty of this. It is usually just general laziness. This is being carried over to real life by way of term papers, written letters, etc. I know that I'm guilty of this too. I am usually a stickler for spelling and punctuation, but I find myself making the same lazy choices over and over again like these.
