the poem is called
"NOT JUST A PLATFORM FROM MY DANCE"
"this land is not
just a place to set my house my car my fence
this land is not just a plot to bury my dead seed
this land is
my tongue my eyes my mouth
this headstrong grass and relenting willow
these flat-footed fields and applauding leaves
these frank winds and electric sky
are my prayer
they are my medicine
and they become my song
this land is not
just a platform for my dance"
Answers:
The theme is, what the author is talking about. What is the author trying to tell us about?
To whom is this poem is addressed? Whom do you think he talking to? You? Me? The guy down the street? Anyone?
The author is trying to say something here. What is it that he wants us to understand? Is it that he doesn't like to dance on a platform? Or is he telling us something deeper?
Read the poem slowly and not in meter. Read it as a paragraph and then answer the questions. We often get confused because the author is saying something but has no punctuation and has divided the poems up into different meters. So forget what it looks like and concentrate on what it sounds like.
Do this will all poems and you will do very well on the next one you come across. :-)
