Question:I used to live in Nigeria and come back to the UK on leave about every two years. Every time I returned, I used to be struck by the changes that had taken place in the UK during those two years. I recently went back to Nigeria on a visit, after an absence of five years and hardly anything had changed.
I have a feeling that this contrast applies not just to the UK and Nigeria and that many rich countries are developing faster than poor countries. Some, like Somalia and Zimbabwe, have seen negative development over the past decade.
Wouldn't it be better to call a spade 'a spade' ? Let's be honest and call them 'poor' or 'backward', no matter how politically incorrect this may be.
Answers:
Peasant countries might be appropriate. Despite sending millions in aid (remember live aid?), nothing changes.
