They may exactly know the difference but they are not really aware about the pronunciation while utterring these words.They dont mind it,it depends on the listeners if they can take it.
If they paid attention in school than they would know the difference between then and than. lol. I feel the same way when people have problems with there and their.
oh well, get a LIFE! instead of making fun of people who do not know the difference between then and than, you should teach them the difference between those two, and all other words that sound the same, but have different meanings... that way it will not get on your nerves the next time it happens.

I don't believe Jon is making a big deal out of it at all. It was just a simple question. A valid one, too.
I think people are just stupid. They don't care enough to pay attention while learning their own language.
There was another answer about not realizing the difference when pronouncing them. Well, they are pronounced differently just as they are spelled and used differently.
