What is, or was, the "ECU", was it the name of the Euro before it changed name? I just can't remember!

Question:I know there is something called ECU that has something to do with cars. It's not that I'm searching. It may not be spelled ECU, but the word sounded something like that. It has something to do with finance.

Answers:
ECU stands for European Currency Unit. For a long time it was used as a means of setting prices for contracts between European member states and it's value was a weighted average of the currencies of all the states. When some of the European states adopted the Euro, it's value was set as one ECU. The ECU is still used as the official currency for transactions between member states, but it's value is now tied to the Euro. Those states who have not adopted the Euro now have to trade in a currency over which they have no influence.
I think it was the provisional name given to the Euro before the present name was agreed upon. European Currency Unit I think it stands for!
I believe the name ECU was just the generic term for the European Currency Unit before a name was attached to the actual coinage.
Wasn't it the european currency unit which was used alongside national currencies , until national currencies, in the main, were not used and the Euro replaced them.
An ECU(Electronic control unit) is also the brain box of many cars, though it also means European currency unit.
i dont exactly kwow it ,but it maybe short for European Currency Unit or European Clearing Union .
Yes. As for cars, can't think of anything except accu, short for accumulator.
As mentioned the "ECU" was recently the European Monetary Unit ,which became the Euro, but 200 years ago the ecu or six livre piece was a French coin equal to five shillings or 25p.
Yep - European Currency Unit, as others have said. I remember people used to say "eck-you" or "eck-oo", rather than "ee-see-you".
Looks like Fluffy got in first. LOL!
