Well, the English beat the French and in a move of defiance against French arrogance, the English archers gave the French a two-finger salute ( the V sign, but showing the backs of their fingers) to show that the English had their fingers and were victorious and the French were not.

The American one-finger salute means that the person giving it is being rebellious against the receiver!
