What is the difference between a geek and a nerd?

Geeks have been around for a much longer time than nerds. Sideshows used to feature "the wild man of Borneo" or some such name, and this guy would bite the heads off chickens or worse. In circus or carnival slang, he was the geek. They were often substance abusers with serious psychological problems.
