Why is it..?

Question:a toothbrush is called a toothbrush? We all tend to have more than one tooth so shouldnt it be called a TEETHBRUSH??

Answers:
Compound words in English are almost always if not always formed with the singular word:
mousetrap, football, bookcase, bedroom
Of course, I'm not answering "why"--I'm just pointing out it's across the board, not specific to toothbrushes.

Steven Pinker addresses this in his book "Words and Rules"--you might like it. good question. hey if u want hen call it that way! There was always a joke about this when I was growing up in Maine. People would insert a small backward town into it: "How do you know the toothbrush was invented in _______, Maine? Because if it were invented anywhere else it would be called a teethbrush. Worked with any town especially if it was really small and hic. : ) but it still brushes a tooth Hahahahahh very good question. You should be relative of
Albert Einstein.

If you also think about toothpaste please let me know. My e-mail is nihon94@yahoo.com Nicely asked!

When they were first invented, people's teeth had gotten so bad (due too lack of brushing), most people were left with only one tooth, hence.

Because you're supposed to clean your teeth with an up and down movement concentrating on cleaning one tooth at a time and then moving to the next and so on.

The first toothbrushes was a stick with the end smashed and could only clean one tooth at a time. It then evolved to what we know today, without changeing its name but became larger so that teeth cleaning was quicker and easier. because english is not the a good language maybe :P
really ı dont know but thank you for the answer in inventory register, it's apple, not apples, etc. Good question which leads me to ask. Why is it called a hairbrush we have lots of hair shouldn't it be called a hairsbrush. Also why do people call it hot water heater there is no need to heat hot water it is called a water heater. and why do we say pair of scissors its only 1 item? If you think I'm joking Look it up in a World Book

The inventer of the toothbrush notice how nasty the smell was that was comming out of everbodies mouth even his so he went and look in a clear lake ( this was that far back ago )
and saw how dirty has theeth was compared to his teething baby boy. so he tried to find a way to keep his kid teeth clean know that it was to late for his. He figered if water could claen people than it cloud maybe claen theeth so he tried to clean his kid TOOTH! he then name the invention the TOOTHbrush. when the toothbrush was invented people couldn't speak English properly so they called it toothbrush instead of a teethbrush
