A giant among men - cliche
Doorway - "this, tough, military man would hit his head on a doorway"
As tall as a Bantu man - Too foreign.
As a gorilla - Not thought of as tall, although they are.
This is one tricky thing, almost all good metaphors/similes are either too foreign, not significant enough, or not tough enough.
